York

We took advantage of a beautiful Friday and headed south to the walled, medieval city of York, famous for the York Minster, an open air market, and the Shambles (a narrow street on which the buildings are built out over the road).

York is a very old city tracing back to Roman times, originally founded in 71 CE. York Minster is a huge cathedral right in the middle of the walled city.

You can walk partially around the city on the original walls, providing excellent views of the city and the Minster.

The Shambles is a Medieval street filled with shops and has an open air marketplace.

We stopped for fudge at a great little shop that was recommended to us called Roly’s.

We had afternoon lunch and tea at the famous tea room, Betty’s. The elegant, wood paneled, downstairs room was inspired by the art deco design of the ocean liner, Queen Mary!

We ended our day at one of the supposed 365 pubs in the city (one for every day!) called the Fat Badger (and met its namesake in one of the many twisting hallways).

Yes, they even have rooms upstairs and a restaurant.
