The Lake District

The Lake District in the northwestern corner of England is one of the most scenic and visited spots in the UK. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) according to the British government. Our friend, Al, took us there for a beautiful day trip. There are beautiful little villages nestled along the lake shores with rising green hills all around them.

Our first stop was Glenridding on the lake named Ullswater where we had lunch, enjoyed the views, and “crashed” a wedding going on at the hotel where we ate.

After lunch, we headed up through the Kirkstone Pass, heading south down to the town of Windermere. Here’s the map from wikipedia:

At the pass summit, at an altitude of 1,489 ft, there is, of course, a pub! Unfortunately it was closed for renovations when we were there.

According to the sign there has been a pub here since 1496 A.D.

The views were spectacular!

Bowness on Windermere is a bustling holiday town on Lake Windermere.

The drive was spectacular and featured many castles. We stopped and got a good view of the ruined Barnard Castle.

It was a fantastic day! Thanks Al!

  1. WOW! This has been the best travel-log ever. I have felt like I was right there with you on your adventures. Thanks for taking me along, and I didn’t have to leave my heated lounge chair. The best of both worlds!
    Hugs, MOM
