While Dave was traveling back to the US for graduation, Deb visited the Royal Yacht Britannia in Edinburgh. It is the former royal yacht of the British Monarchy and was in service from 1954 until 1997. Today it is a floating museum and is open to the public.
The bridge and the view from the bridge are impressive!
The yacht was the home and office of the royal family as they travelled around the world. The Queen wanted it to have a light country feel which is reflected in the furnishings.
The Queen’s bedroom and study:
The tea room:
The Royal Family’s lounge:
There was of course a formal dining room:
Britannia was also home to some lucky military personnel while the Queen was traveling. She brought along a Marine Band who had their own quarters along side the Royal Navy personnel.
It had a fully functioning infirmary:
as well as a full laundry and dry cleaning facility. Depending on what was happening on board, some officers had to change uniforms up to six times a day!
For relaxation there is the Royal sun deck:
And of course, because it’s a British ship, multiple pubs available depending on your rank:
And don’t forget the Royal Land Rover for those safaris!
Now that’s what I call cruising in style!
The Royals knew how to travel in style and comfort.
I saw this in some of the documentaries! Must have been impressive!
Thanks for the virtual tour of the Royal life at sea.
Looking forward to seeing you and Dave soon.
Just checking to see if you’ve seen the Downton Abbey movie that includes the yacht: https://www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/visit/blog/downton-abbey-on-board/ –Tom
