We decided to stay in Durham over the holidays to get a feel for an English Christmas. It did not disappoint! We went to a bunch of Christmas Markets, carol services, and we even had some snow! The picture above was taken from the window of a local Turkish restaurant. There were lots of other sights as well.
The King and Queen of the North Pole made an appearance:
There were always lots of folks out and about getting ready for the holidays.
The Salvation Army Band played in the Market Square:
There was a Christmas Market and Craft Fair ….
…. where we saw this gentleman selling his cheese (not his real hair!). Blessed are the Cheesemakers!
We went to York for a day, an easy trip by train, and a beautiful place.
We put up a traditional “Twig Tree” in our front window. Very simple but still festive! Even if it is sitting on top of one of the cat towers….
We went to a service of the Nine Lessons and Carols of Christmas in the Cathedral, which was really beautiful at night.
A local brewer did a tribute to Shane McGowan, from the Irish band The Pogues, who passed away recently and is famous for the Christmas song “Fairy Tale of New York”
