Wolsingham Agricultural Show

Last weekend we went to County Durham’s largest, and England’s longest running outdoor agricultural show (a.k.a., a “State Fair” as we would call it). The Wolsingham Agricultural Show has been held every year since 1763! Much like our State Fair, the focus is on agricultural life and products, with competitions for livestock, baking, and crafts. Also, tractor pulling and a strongman competition!

Intriguingly, and perhaps a missed opportunity, the Strong Men did not pull the tractors.

There were old tractors:

and lots of livestock. Cattle:

Pigs:

Somewhat ironically, the pig tent was sponsored by a butcher shop…..

Sheep:

Alpaca:

and Goats!!!!

There were also Giant Tortoises (not sure where they came from) and birds of prey:

A bird of prey to deliver your wedding bands! What could possibly go wrong? Keep the small pets far away…..

Of course there were also baking, crafts, and other contests:

We don’t really understand the “Fresh Egg” competition, but a friend told us the goal is for a really clear egg white and a really orange egg yolk. But how do you know before you crack it?

And the best ride of all!

  2. So beautiful to see all of the farm animals – thanks for sharing. And I’m glad to know that is Yanks aren’t the only idiots who have tractor pulling contests. Best, David

  3. What no fainting goats? What a fabulous adventure! Have fun. Brings back memories when Debbie was little and wanted a baby lamb, which she assured us she would keep in her clothes closet…….hope she has out grown that phase! Keep the photos coming.
