This weekend we went to the London area to visit our good friends who live in Knebworth. On Friday, they arranged for us to go to dinner to the George and Vulture in London. There has been a pub, restaurant, or inn on this site since about 1142 (that’s not a typo, that’s almost 900 years ago).
Given the age of the restaurant, it has hosted many important people over the years. Most notably, Charles Dickens lived here for a while. He was here when he wrote The Pickwick Papers, and we sat at the table for dinner where he reputedly did much of the writing! It’s this table in the corner by the windows (and yes, that’s our mess).
The current proprietors (and head chef) gave us a tour of the building including the upstairs rooms where Dickens, and reportedly his mistress, lived. (Sorry for the orange lighting….)
The story goes that they built a second entrance adjacent to the restaurant, disguised as a shop front, for her to come and go without being noticed.
Once a year the male descendants of Dickens come back for a Christmas party. We’ve booked a table for that night and can’t wait to see what happens!

Spooky, but awesome….so what did you eat? Same thing as famed author?
The chef is AMAZING! I had trout and Dave had steak. We followed it with Sticky Toffee Pudding. Good thing we walk everywhere! Don’t spare the butter or the cream!
