Durham University Botanic Gardens

As our time in Durham is winding down we continue to find more local things to do. On a sunny afternoon we went to the Durham University Botanic Gardens. The gardens are pretty large, covering almost 25 acres, right on campus. It is divided up into sections based on the climates in which the plants are native.

There is a greenhouse full of desert plants:

Numerous water gardens and water features:

Some bamboo areas:

Plenty of lush greenery with spring blooming flowers:

Here’s Dave standing under a Giant Rhubarb Plant:

In the North American Arboretum we found the Oregon Maple, known for its very large leaves:

The leaves truly are “Giant”:

There are sculptures throughout the gardens as well:

A beautiful spring day at the Durham Botanical Gardens!

  1. This is so beautiful! I love the mushroom sculpture so much. It is probably WAY to late to recommend this, but if you need a break from packing, one of my bucket list items is the Alnwick Garden in Leeds. They have the Poison Garden there and they have their own gin in the gift shop (Limited Edition Cherry Blossom)! Good luck packing up and safe travel back to the US!

  2. Beautiful, thanks for sharing. I feel like I am right there with both of you……and no long distance plane ride!

  3. What a gorgeous garden and grounds for sculpture. Thank you so much for sharing these!!

  4. What a fun way to spend a beautiful afternoon! But I’m surprised that they’re able to grow such a variety of vegetation in that climate-especially the bamboo plants.
